Although there is no formal requirement to enrol to this module, basic knowledge of microeconomics principles (e.g. negative externalities, market failure) is an asset.

Learning Outcome and Competences
PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE
The students are able to
identify the most important contemporary issues in environmental economics,
discuss the principles and rationale for environmental valuation and cost benefit analysis,
use economic arguments to inform and discuss environmental policy proposals.
METHODICAL COMPETENCE
The students are able to
apply concepts from environmental economics to real life scenarios,
identify and compare different economic instruments such as taxes and trading in environmental management,
identify, apply and compare different methodologies to value the environment,
comprehend basic principles of environmental and resource economics.
SELF- AND SOCIAL COMPETENCE
The students have the following competences
self-assessment and self-reflection,
information presentation and interpretation,
written communication (assessed in report assignment and examinations),
oral communications (developed in verbal presentations and discussion with the class).

Module Content
Introduction and Overview of Environmental Economics. Sustainability, economic growth.
Principles of (Micro)economics. Market Failures and the need for environmental policy.
Valuing Environmental Goods & Services.
Valuing the environment via stated preferences.
Valuing the environment via revealed preferences.
Cost-benefit analysis.
Climate Change Economics.
Pollution as a market failure. Economics of pollution control: Instruments (an overview).
Written Exam / Feedback and evaluation of the course (by students).
Group Presentations on specific topics: Presentation based on an academic paper

The assessment of learning outcome is composed as follows
final written exam (60%)
individual assignment and presentation (40%)
