Module Content
With its multiple function, including the provision of food, fibres, energy and several environmental services, agriculture plays a key role in the sustainability and the future of our society. However, conflicts between the different needs for land us are on the rise, and exacerbated by current trends such as population growth, changes in dietary habits, a growing demand for biofuels, and climate change. The stability of the global food system is jeopardized and a transformation is needed, if we want to feed a growing population without destroying the natural resource base.
In this course we will create scenarios for the future of agriculture, evaluate the potential and impact of (technological, socio-economic and environmental) drivers, and identify pathways needed for a sustainable transformation. The scenarios will be evaluated in terms off sustainability and resilience, considering trade-offs between food, environmental resources and energy.
