Degree Program MSc in Preneurship for Regenerative Food Systems

Entry Requirements Students should be able to
  • Understand the setup, dynamics, and stakeholders of food systems and food businesses
  • Communicate effectively and work in a solution-oriented, appreciative way as part of a project team.
Learning Outcome and  Competences Students will be able to
  • Apply their academic knowledge, acquired methodological skills and personal experience to an existing food business case in a selected geographical location.
  • Analyse various stakeholder interests, needs and success factors in the context of regenerative food business and food system transformation.
  • Become part of a real food business case and apply a preneurial perspective to evaluate and reflect on the past performances regarding the degree of regenerative impact.
  • Assess and develop regenerative impact measurement options.
  • Evaluate the existing and potential degree of regeneration within the local food system.
  • Recognise main challenges and develop potential solutions for regenerative food business and food system transformation, by learning from other actors within or outside the food system.
  • Develop lessons learned and best practice factors for the transformation of food business cases towards regeneration based on concrete measures.
Module Content In this module, students travel to become part of and dive deeper into a local food system based on a preneurial food business perspective. It is the overall aim of the module that the students develop a 360° understanding of a specific food system.
 
The students assess and reflect the status of diverse food businesses in this specific system according to its degree of regeneration and overall performance. Regeneration puts human wellbeing and planetary health at the centre of all decision-making and thus, goes beyond sustainability in terms of positive impact. Transformation towards regeneration implies a reconnecting paradigm shift based on nature’s principles. Besides applying methods and background research, the students engage in the local food system for a few consecutive days as a food business actor. They get in touch with relevant stakeholders, conduct interviews and draw an actual food system map comprising all local subsystems. On this basis, the students (individually and in groups) evaluate past and current food business practices of various entities in the system in terms of their progress towards regeneration. Finally, they also detect hidden potentials and co-create alternative solutions for the stakeholders and entire system to become more regenerative.
 
This module is very practice-oriented since the students will be part of the system and its respective food businesses for a few days and thus, have an intense learning experience through the personal contact with diverse stakeholders as well as with the inspiration and feedback they receive from their colleagues. In this module, students get the opportunity to bring in their own questions, interests, and topics regarding regenerative businesses, regenerative food system evaluation and its development.

Assessment of Learning

  • Written documentation (70%)
  • Individual reflection on the module objectives and content (30%)
 
In case of failed assessment, the following options are possible:
  1. The failed written assessments may be resubmitted. Counts as first attempt.
  2. The failed assessments can be repeated the next time they are scheduled in the regular timetable. Counts as second attempt.

Comments The lectures for this course will take place online (unless otherwise communicated) and possibly in the evenings and / or on weekends. Presence during the lectures will be a prerequisite to join the excursion and therefore pass the module. Some lectures / activities might take place outside of the regular semester week schedule. At some point during the module there will be a mandatory excursion for 1-5 days. The costs for this excursion must be carried by the students themselves.
