Learning Outcomes and Competencies Students will ...
  • be able to apply mathematical concepts to analyse, simulate and optimise environmental processes, using practical examples.
  • be able to model complex interactions within environmental systems, thereby facilitating their understanding of environmental impacts and the formulation of sustainable solutions.
  • understand the foundational theoretical concepts of mathematics necessary to develop, analyse, and validate mathematical models for addressing environmental issues.
Module Content Fundamentals of mathematical modelling:
  • Applications of differential and integral calculus (including optimisation)
  • Differential equations and their application in environmental systems
  • System variables and parameter dependency
Modelling of physical systems:
  • Introduction to simulation software
  • Representing physical systems in software
  • Validating mathematical models through experimental data
  • Conducting simple physical experiments
  • Creating simple models for physical systems
