Attitudes:
Students recognize that effectively communicating in English requires more than simply understanding individual words and phrases. They value the need for active practice to express themselves clearly and with nuance. They are critically aware of how their manner of communication influences meaning, both in presentational speaking and in interaction with others. They view self-reflection as an essential part of the learning process, appreciate that vocabulary gains meaning only in context, and regard online tools as useful and appropriate support for language development when used with critical awareness.
Knowledge:
Students understand that precision of language directly affects the clarity, nuance, and complexity of the ideas they are able to communicate. They recognize the importance of organizing their ideas clearly orally and how signposting language supports listener understanding as well as speaker focus. They understand that effective spoken interaction involves using specific interactive strategies to facilitate communication. They are aware of the balance between fluency and accuracy in speaking and that different contexts require different language registers.
Skills:
Students can speak with ease about a range of media- and communications-related topics, using signposting language to present and develop their ideas clearly. They can engage meaningfully with others by responding thoughtfully and building precisely on others’ ideas in discussions. They apply interactive language strategies to facilitate effective exchange of ideas. They use English at an upper B2 level, incorporating topic-specific vocabulary related to media and communications, and know how to continue expanding their vocabulary independently.
