Learning objectives
Attitude:
Being in a position to justify own methodological choices in organizational communication, interpreting, and translation research
Willingness to perform in front of an audience
Willingness to work in groups and teams
Willingness to take on leadership and counselling tasks
Knowledge:
Understanding the importance of research design and the difference between research methodology, methods, and data collection tools. Knowing the quality criteria applicable to different methodological approaches and recognizing possibilities and limitations of these approaches.
Skills:
Being capable of assessing ethical issues in a research project.
High resilience and stress resistance
High degree of self-organisation and self-control with individualisation of own profile
Course content
The course provides an introduction to:
basics of applied linguistics methodology: research design; research questions; types of potential ethical issues; types of data.
qualitative research study designs: overview of qualitative methods and data; applicable quality criteria.
quantitative research study designs: overview of quantitative methods and data; applicable quality criteria.
mixed-method designs: triangulation of data, methods, and researchers; reflective research practice.
Form of instruction
The course format is a mixture of
a) online lectures;
b) group discussions;
c) student presentations.
Each of the four blocks comprises input in plenum, followed by interactive considerations of ways research questions in applied linguistics have been and could be addressed. Discussions in small groups, both across or within professional specialisations, of the methodology, methods, and tools reported in recent applied linguistics publications (whenever possible from projects in the School of Applied Linguistics) are summarised in short presentations by designated members of the respective groups. Tutorials and recommended readings foster autonomous learning.
Core term
Research design
Research design refers to the framework or structure that is used to address the research questions of interest in any particular research project or study. It is basically the logic that connects the conceptual research problems (which are usually formulated as research questions or hypotheses) to the actual empirical research that is carried out to collect pertinent data, information or evidence. Research always has to be planned and designed carefully in order to increase the chances that the information needed to answer a particular question, test a theory, evaluate a program, or accurately describe a phenomenon is actually obtained. The research design therefore includes all of the components for successfully carrying out a research project or study. It specifies the type of data that is required, the scope of the sample that will be considered, the setting, the methods that are going to be used to collect and analyse the data, and how all of those considerations taken together can answer the research question(s).
Different design logics are used for different types of research studies. The research design thus defines the approach that will be used (i.e. qualitative, quantitative, pragmatic, mixed-methods); the type of study to be carried out (e.g. descriptive, correlational, case study, quasi-experimental, experimental); the sub-type (e.g. cross-sectional, longitudinal); and the data collection methods (e.g. observations, interviews, surveys, tests, assessments, document reviews). In addition, the research design must explicitly include ethical considerations such as the procedures that will be used to ensure the integrity of the information while maintaining confidentiality and anonymity of participants.
