Entry Requirements
The students have
  • a basic understanding of biology, microbial processes, chemistry, physics of water, systems engineering
  • good knowledge of MS Excel
Ausgangskompetenzen
Learning Outcome and Competences
Students will learn to
  • differentiate various aquaculture systems and their characteristics,
  • explain the concept of operations of an aquaculture (in particular recirculating aquaculture systems) and assess it quantitatively,
  • name important factors for fish welfare and explain how they are ensured in aquaculture systems.
On a more general level, students
  • can evaluate concepts of operations,
  • have in-depth knowledge of technical systems that involve biological and microbial processes,
  • can explain processes for water treatment,
  • have experienced the challenges for businesses that are created by a regulatory environment, a competitive situation and ethical principles.
Inhalte
Module Content
Fish biology
  • anatomy, physiology, and behavior of fish (with particular emphasis on aquaculture)
  • requirements for fish husbandry in systems with water treatment
  • fish health in aquaculture: ectoparasites, infectious diseases, stress, injuries
  • reproduction in aquaculture
Technology
  • process flow diagrams of recirculating aquaculture systems
  • mathematical modeling of and material flow analysis of metabolic products in recirculating aquaculture systems
  • dimensioning of steps involving microbial processes and their technical control
  • modelling of gas transfer (O2, CO2, N2)
  • efficiency and mechanisms of photochemical sterilization
  • hydraulics: computer-aided calculation of pressure loss in piping systems
  • energy balance: metabolic and technical energy flows in recirculating systems
Operation
  • operating procedures and terminology in fish production
  • use of modeling to obtain the most economical age structure of fish stocks in an aquaculture
  • quality management of feed: contaminations
