Description

Version: 1.0 start 01 February 2022

Short description

Basic and advanced concepts in thermal imaging and their applications in medical engineering and biology

Module coordinator

Mathias Bonmarin (bmat)

Learning objectives (competencies)

Objectives Competences Taxonomy levels
The students know the physical principles behind thermalimaging from the nature of the thermal radiation to the functioning of thermal sensors F K2
The student can use computers to simulate complex biological thermodynamics phenomena F, M K2, K3, K4
The students will work in teams to solve applications-relevant problems and will submit report of their work M, SO K2, K3, K4, K5

Module contents

At the end of the course the students will be familiar with thermal imaging and able to design an experiment from acquisition to image processing in a clinical setting. They will know how to select an IR camera including optics, which protocol to implement, how to store the images. They will understand and be able to implement specific IR image processing tools.
In addition, they will understand the basics of setting up a clinical investigation with a novel medical device (regulatory, ethic commission, Swissmedic).

  • Thermal radiation basics
  • Infrared detectors and arrays
  • Experimental measurement concepts
  • Thermal image analysis, storage and retrieval
  • Modelling heat transfer in biological tissue
  • Quantitative data analysis in active thermal imaging
  • Building thermal skin phantoms
  • Clinical study in infrared imaging
