Learning Outcomes and Competencies GKS classes serve to teach cultural competence and historical-political awareness. Students also learn the fundamentals of scientific work and writing through completion of a written assignment.
 
Discipline specific skills:
 
Students are encouraged to understand social reality as something that has been shaped by history and which is therefore also able to be shaped. Orientational knowledge in a complex world is increased by allowing space for reflection and critical thinking.
  • They will also be able to formulate their thoughts into clear arguments.
  • They will question supposedly inevitable social constants and learn to incorporate their own points of view.
  • They will be able to reflect on societal issues from multiple perspectives and approach them analytically.
  • They will be able to participate in controversial discussions in a factual, cooperative and solution-oriented manner.
 
Interdisciplinary skills:
 
Students will be able to understand and compose scientific texts and will improve their oral and written communication skills.
  • Students will be able to explain the rules and conventions of scientific writing.
  • They will apply this knowledge through a written assignment.
  • They will be able to formulate their thoughts in a manner that is appropriate to the addressee both in writing and orally.
Students will gain the skills necessary to deal with challenges in both their studies and their professional lives.
  • They will have the ability to deal with tasks in a problem- and solution-oriented manner.
  • They will develop their self-competence (motivation, self-discipline, critical faculties).
  • They will increase their social competence (ability to engage in dialogue, ability to reach a consensus, ability to work in a team).
Module Content Students choose a course from a range of different topics. For example:
 
  • Transparency and Mystery in Literature and Film
  • Migration and Racism
  • Concepts of nature in the course of time
  • The history of the future
  • The history of images and signs
