Entrance Requirements Measurement and Control Technology 1, Practical Measurement and Sensor Technology
Learning Outcomes and Competencies Following completion of this practical module, students will

  • be able to design and interpret control concepts for facilities using P&I flow diagrams following the common standards for facilities.
  • be able to design and describe control concepts for facilities in a suitable manner for the automation technology interface.
  • be able to determine the control parameters for PID controllers using various methods and commission the controllers in practice. In addition, they will be able to optimise controllers in practical operation with regard to their control quality.
  • know the basic features of the architecture of modern process control systems.
  • be able to set up a simple control system for a facility using suitable software, including an interface to measuring and control points and visualisation.
Module Content The module includes the following topics:

  • Representation of (complex) control loops in P&I flow diagrams according to the common standards
  • Control concepts for typical applications in bioprocess technology
  • PID controllers: adjustment and optimisation according to various methods, problem identification in the event of unstable control
  • Design of automation concepts (e.g. control system architecture, functional description).
  • Structure and function of programmable logic controllers and process control systems (including integration of field elements, integration and communication standards, software).

The practical examples for the course are worked out on the basis of the systems in the laboratories of bioprocess technology, chemical engineering and environmental biotechnology (among others).
