Learning Outcomes and Competencies
The students …
  • possess a solid basic understanding of ecology, genetics, and botany,
  • are able to explain concepts in these sciences,
  • can prepare and examine microscopic specimens, and
  • have applied their ecological knowledge in practice.
Module Content Biology:
  • Genes, alleles, dominant-recessive and incompletely dominant inheritance
  • Anatomy of the cormophytes (root, shoot axis, leaf)
  • The functions of plant organs
  • Photosynthesis, including photorespiration and C4 plants
  • Reproduction in flowering plants (flower anatomy, development of female and male gametophyte, double fertilisation, fruits and seeds)
Ecology:
  • Evolution
  • Environmental conditions and resources
  • Biotic interactions (competition, predator-prey)
  • Material and energy flows in ecosystems
  • Population ecology
  • Population genetics
  • Biotic communities

Classroom Attendance Attending the biology and ecology practicals is compulsory
Assessment
  • Written end-of-module exam (100 %) / e-assessment
  • Attendance requirement (pass/fail)
The partial assessment "attendance requirement" must be passed in order for the module as a whole to be passed.

If there is a low number of participants, the lecturer may change the form of a repeat examination after consultation with the head of the study programme: e.g. an oral examination can be used to replace a written one. Comments The ecology lectures are largely based on the book " Ökologie", which is available online for free from the university library (third edition of the German version). Selected and shortened chapters (and possibly sections from other textbooks) are provided on Moodle.
