Learning Outcomes and Competencies Students should be able to
  • identify political frameworks, legal considerations and management principles of different categories of protected area.
  • analyse protection and usage conflicts as well as the load-bearing capacity in a protected area and plan measures to steer visitors in particular directions.
  • analyse a protected area and its fields of activity as a basis for planning and advising managers of parks and protected areas.  
  • interpret the role and task of parks as a driving force for holistic sustainable development (change management)
  • analyse successful examples of sustainable park development from various protected area categories and present arguments for/against protected areas.

  • Categories of protected areas in a national and international context
  • The role of protected areas and parks for holistic sustainable development
  • Legal and political frameworks
  • History and principles of parks
2. Management principles for parks and protected areas:
  • Types of protected area management
  • Change management and governance at the intersection of nature, culture, business and education
  • Management of projects for sustainable transformation in protected areas
  • Parks as "Living Labs" and transformative learning places
3. Dealing with conflicts between protection and usability:
  • Fundamentals of visitor management
  • Theoretical planning approaches
  • Foundations for regional analyses
4. Parks as a driving force for holistic sustainable development:
  • Fundamentals of Change Management
  • Analysis of successful examples
  • Arguments for/against protected area
