Description

Version: 3.0 start 01 August 2023

Short description

Sensors based on optical principles are becoming increasingly common as they offer high precision at low cost.
Electronic circuits for optical sensors and actuators are discussed, designed and practically used in this module.

Module coordinator

Hochreutener Hanspeter (hhrt)

Learning objectives (competencies)

Objectives Competences Taxonomy levels
The students know the typical electrical properties of photodiodes, avalanche photodiodes and photomultipliers, light-emitting diodes and laser diodes. F 1 - 3
They know how a transconductance amplifier for photodiodes is designed and can combine it with a filter. F, M 2 - 4
They know how current sources and modulators for LEDs and laser diodes work. F 1 - 3
The students are able to implement concrete applications in practice: E.g. light barriers, distance sensors, optocouplers, isolation amplifiers, thermo-electric cooling, ... F, M 2 - 5
