Description

Version: 3.0 start 01 August 2013

Module Co-ordinator:

Bergmaier, Rolf, xbem

Learning objectives:

Objectives Competences Taxonomy level
Students know the systems characteristics and principles of production processes on road and rail.  F K2
They can apply simple calculation methods with regard to the productivity of rail and road operation.  F, M K3
They know the most important systems characteristics regulations in rail and road transport.  F K2

Module Contents:

Basic principles
  • Simple methods to calculate the productivity of production systems
  • Interaction of those involved, users, transport infrastructure and transport operators/companies
  • Systems characteristics and production processes of passenger and freight transport systems dependent on and not dependent on road transport (railway infrastructure and railway company processes)
  • Traffic flows, traffic separation, capacities of transport systems
Operation on rail
  • Planning and deployment
  • Operational control process, supervisory and safety levels
  • Timetable planning, timetable processes, publication, assured and non-assured connections between different services
  • Types and management of operational disruptions
  • Passenger transport: driving, maintenance, cleaning, stabling, strengths, weaknesses, modularisation, special train services, ad hoc train service replacements
  • Interfaces to third parties, e.g. Elvetino (railway catering provider), customs, cycle courier services
  • Freight transport: block trains, shunting, principles of freight train scheduling, border-crossings
  • Special transport: excess loads, hazardous goods
Operation on road
  • Traffic management, traffic flow in cities/conurbations and on motorways; capacity of transport infrastructures
  • Concept of traffic light control, temporary staged access
  • Parking management
  • Trams / buses / dial-a-bus services: prioritisation of public transport
  • Disruptions, traffic jams, congestion
  • Planning principles: visibility, braking distances, radii, etc.
  • Slow transport: characteristics
Regulations (selected topics)
  • Regulations for rail transport with regard to system characteristics (railway operating regulations, train runs, shunting, trams, trolleybuses, working regulations)
  • Regulations for road transport (buses, coaches, lorries, duty times and rest requirements)
  • Different laws regarding operation on rail and road (StVG, FDV, AB-EBV)
  • Maintenance planning: guaranteeing operations during servicing
  • Large-scale events
