Entrance Requirements Microbiology 1
Learning Outcomes and Competencies The Molecular Biology 1 module is an introduction to genetic engineering. It provides a theoretical understanding of the production of recombinant proteins in expression systems and serves as preparation for the practical courses in Molecular Biology which follow. Students learn the basic techniques for developing simple cloning strategies.
Module Content The fundamentals of bacteria and eukaryotic gene structures will be covered, along with DNA regulation. In preparation for future development of cloning strategies, PCR and the construction of DNA vectors will be covered. DNA ligation is used to integrate a PCR product into a selected DNA vector using restriction enzymes. The transfer of DNA to plants by Agrobacterium tumefaciens is used as a concrete example of natural gene transfer. PCR and the construction of plasmids used for expression of recombinant proteins will be discussed in detail as a cloning strategy.
