Learning Outcomes and Competencies Students will
  • become familiar with the basics of balancing and dimensioning ideal reactors;
  • understand the meaning and basic concepts for calculating biotechnologically relevant variables;
  • be able to record series of measurements of process variables, present them clearly in graphical form and describe them in the text;
  • be able to contextualise the physiological needs of an organism (a cell) and the appropriate composition of the nutrient media for biotechnological production as well as environmental processes;
  • be able to determine kinetic and stoichiometric quantities of common growth or mass transfer models;
  • be able to prepare an SOP;
  • be able to combine fundamental principles of chemistry, mathematics, physics and biology to plan and evaluate a batch experiment in a bioreactor.
Module Content Practical competence in:
  • Assembling a bioreactor
  • SIP and CIP processes
  • Work on the bioreactor in a sterile environment
  • E. coli batch for the production of a recombinant protein
  • Yeast batch (two-phase growth)
  • Cell disruption and enzyme activity
  • Evaluation and analysis of process data
  • Writing an SOP
