Learning Outcomes and Competencies
This module focuses on the fundamentals of producing biochemicals and materials from biomass. It provides an overview of key metrics for biobased products, various types of biomass, their potential uses and the corresponding processing technologies. Students will:
be able to describe the significance and challenges of producing biobased chemicals and materials.
be able assess the sustainability of these products using key metrics
know the main components of biomass and be able to associate them with corresponding bioproducts.
be able to explain the major steps and concepts in key biorefinery technologies
be able to evaluate different biorefinery technologies in terms of their concepts, capabilities, and limitations
be able to categorise various types of biopolymers and identify key examples
be able to explain the importance of green solvents and name key representatives
Be able to discuss the significance of green fine chemicals and provide examples
