Entrance Requirements In order to participate in the course, students must have taken, or must be taking (in the same semester) ‘Bioprocess Technology 2’.
Learning Outcomes and Competencies On a practical level, students will learn to
  • plan, execute and evaluate a microbial (high cell density) cultivation in a fedbatch process
  • practically apply fully automated process monitoring and control strategies according to standards of modern biotechnological production (Industry 4.0)
  • work independently in teams (shift work) during execution of experiments lasting several days
  • analyse, interpret and present process data according to scientific criteria
  • use digital tools (mobile data logging, remote control, real-time information exchange, expert networks) in an optimal manner in various process steps
  • critically discuss experimental results in the context of the current state of scientific research
Module Content The following topics of current research within the institute will also be addressed:

  • Theoretical planning and practical implementation of a fed-batch process with a biotechnological production strain (e.g. yeasts, microalgae, E. coli)
  • Actual implementation of in-process analytics (PAT e.g. biomass determination, protein analysis, product characterisation, etc.), as well as holistic evaluation thereof
  • Supplementation of the process as required through further unit operations of the upstream and downstream area
  • Data evaluation and interpretation through teamwork
  • Creation of a deeper understanding of critical process parameters and control thereof
  • Demonstration of the potential of physiology-based real-time control strategies
  • Dealing with special aspects of large-scale plants (scale-up) (inhomogeneities, foam formation, volume loss)

This practical course is conducted as a block course and is supplemented by theory (prerequisite: attendance at ‘Bioprocess Technology 2’) as well as the applied technologies
