Learning Outcomes and Competencies Students will...
  • understand the role of natural substances in drug research and the   cultural history of pharmacy.
  • learn about strategies to research traditionally used plants (ethnopharmacy).
  • become familiar with examples of molecular structures and properties of natural plant substances as well as the ways in which these are used in today's pharmaceuticals, food supplements, cosmetics, etc.
  • learn about raw material sources of natural substances and the most important technologies for extraction thereof.
  • learn about the challenges of product development with multi-component active substances.
  • be able apply strategies for the characterisation and standardisation of product quality.
  • be able to immediately distinguish between the requirements for phyto-products for market authorisation in the pharmaceutical, food and cosmetics sectors.
  • be able to assess the role of biotechnology in both the reproducible production of plant-based feedstocks and final product manufacture.
Module Content
  1. Lectures on the following topics: pharmaceutical research with natural plant compounds, ethnopharmacology, phytotherapy, phytochemistry, phytomedicine, complementary medicine
  2. Laboratory practicals involving the production of plant preparations as a basis for pharmaceuticals, health products, or cosmetics
  3. Excursions including visits to companies or pharmacies with a focus on phytomedicine, as well as guided garden tours on medicinal plants
