Learning Outcomes and Competencies Subject competences:

The students
  • understand the foundations and concepts of modern operating systems.
  • can use the shell and operating system tools to process data and automate processes.
  • understand the virtualisation mechanisms of operating systems and can use that on a practical level.
  • know the different operating models for infrastructure and data processing services and can decide about the respective suitability for their applications and life science settings.
  • can produce cloud infrastructure and services in an automated manner, and apply them for a programmatic data processing in life sciences.

Interdisciplinary competences:

The students
  • can analyse local and cloud-based infrastructure services, as well as assess them and use them in a problem-adequate manner.
  • can apply their programming skills ‘in the large‘ for the automation of data-intensive processes.
Module Content Operating systems and tools
  • Basic concepts of modern operating systems (especially resource management, process management and file system)
  • How to work with the operating system shell. Using operating system tools, implementing pipelines and simple shell scripts to automate data processing tasks.
  • Principles of hardware and operating system virtualization and their application in data processing. Using virtual machines and containers on the local computer and in the data-centre.
  • Interaction between programming language and operating system.

Infrastructure for data- and computing-intensive applications
  • Version control, data integration and workflows.
  • Cloud computing as well as cloud services for data processing.
  • Usage of cloud services to create data processing workflows (event-based processing, pipelines, DataOps/MLOps, ...)
  • Automated provisioning of data processing services as well as reproducibility of the processing.
Follow-up Modules -
Methods of Instruction  Competence-oriented lectures, exercises with real systems and applications through provided virtual environments
Digital Resources
  • Shared cloud infrastructure (OSI VM)
  • Selflearn environment with tutoring (Edushell)
  • OA textbook «Operating Systems and Infrastructure in Data Science»
  • OER accompaignment videos
  • Exercise tasks and challenge tasks
Lesson Structure / Workload
 Contact Hours 28
 Guided Self-Study 28
 Independent Self-Study 64
 Total Workload 120
Classroom Attendance Lectures in self-study/online, exercises in presence
Assessment
  • Written exam at the end of the semester (80%) / e-assessment
  • Course work (20%)
Competence-oriented examination in a provisioned operating system environment

If there is a low number of participants, the lecturer may change the form of a repeat examination after consultation with the head of the study programme: e.g. an oral examination can be used to replace a written one. Please report any changes to the form of examinations by e-mail to pruefungsadmin.lsfm@zhaw.ch and Cc. Head of study programme.
