Learning Outcomes and Competencies The students will …
  • acquire a solid foundational understanding of ecology, genetics, and botany.
  • be able to explain concepts associated with these fields.
  • learn how to prepare and examine microscopic specimens.
  • be able to apply selected concepts to field studies.
Module Content Biology:
  • Genes, alleles, dominant-recessive and incompletely dominant inheritance
  • Anatomy of the cormophytes (root, shoot axis, leaf)
  • The functions of plant organs
  • Photosynthesis, including photorespiration and C4 plants
  • Reproduction in flowering plants (flower anatomy, development of female and male gametophyte, double fertilisation, fruits and seeds)
Ecology:
  • Evolution
  • Environmental conditions and resources
  • Biotic interactions (competition, predator-prey)
  • Material and energy flows in ecosystems
  • Population ecology
  • Population genetics
  • Biotic communities

Comments The ecology lectures are largely based on the book " Ökologie", which is available online for free from the university library (third edition of the German version). Selected and shortened chapters (and possibly sections from other textbooks) are provided on Moodle.
