Learning outcomes and competencies
  • Students know and understand the various properties and areas of use of materials that are significant for facilities.
  • They can evaluate the suitability of materials for specific areas of use, giving justifications and taking various aspects into account such as cleaning, service life and operating costs, ecological efficiency, the effects of form and colour, etc. On the basis of a building's use, they can propose an ideal choice of materials for the interior furnishings and are thus competent partners for building owners and architects during the planning and implementation of conversions and new constructions.
  • Students can select suitable materials for the fields of catering, hotels, working clothes and equipment, giving justifications for their choices. They are aware of differences in quality and the areas of use of various textiles.
Course content Students acquire basic knowledge of various materials groups for facilities. They gain various knowledge about a broad range of materials, taking the following aspects into consideration:
  • manufacturing and finishing processes
  • properties and areas of use
  • surface treatment / protective equipment
  • long-term behaviour of materials
  • quality features
  • cleaning aspects
  • ecology and sustainability
  • materials vocabulary, optics and effect
  • purchase and selection criteria
  • product lifecycle / lifecycle assessment and disposal / recycling
They learn to perceive and evaluate interior spaces in relation to the fundamental design media material, colour, form and light, and their interaction. In the process they recognise that light and colour have both a physiological and psychological effect, are means of communication and style creation, and significantly influence a space as conveyors of atmosphere.

They deepen their knowledge through a practical project in which they select materials for interior spaces and search for both innovative and traditional ways of using the materials. The use-related requirements of the interior spaces to be designed are the primary focus.
