Zu erreichende Kompetenzen The aim of the 4-semester course is to bring students to around the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework level C1. At this level students
• can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts and recognise implicit meaning.
• can express themselves fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions.
• can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes.
• can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects.
The course also aims to prepare students to be competent English users in their future employment and/or study situations.
Lerninhalte The course book provides a range of speaking, listening, writing and reading practice appropriate to the course level. The grammar and vocabulary components are complemented by the practice book and additional worksheets.

Articles (related to the students’ study areas, topical issues or popular science) are also used to provide extra reading practice (including fast reading), to develop vocabulary, and as a basis for discussion. Students are also required to read a book during this semester, which forms the basis of either an obligatory spoken or written task.

Writing practice includes job applications and CVs.

Frequent pair and group work activities give students the opportunity to improve their speaking skills.

Learning outcomes and competencies Students take a reflective attitude towards management processes and develop their skills and competences so that they can be successful in both leadership and subordinate roles.
At the level of social and leadership skills they develop an understanding of the need for respectful and appreciative dealings with employees and understand the impact of leadership on motivation and health.
  • At the level of personal skills they reflect on meaningful forms of leadership and consciously position themselves and their value systems
  • At the level of professional skills they acquire fundamental knowledge in the field of leadership studies, know the effective mechanisms of direct and indirect leadership and can classify various psychological phenomenons regarding leadership
  • At the level of methodological skills they analyse activities in terms of their motivational potential and working conditions in terms of their promotion of health and personality, and they know how to address scientifically various problems in the area of social science.
  • At the level of social and leadership skills they develop an understanding of the need for respectful and appreciative dealings with employees and understand the impact of leadership on motivation and health.

  • Historical development of organisational structures, management theories and ideas of humanity
  • Taylorism and the classical organisation structure
  • Hawthorne and the human relations movement
  • Findings from Tavistock and semi-autonomous working groups
  • Comparison of authoritarian and democratic structures and cultures
  • Basics of motivational research
  • Work motivation according to Hackman & Oldham, Herzberg and Sprenger
  • Work satisfaction and its influencing factors
  • Motivation and health enhancing task structure and work design
  • Practical examination of the theories through work on selected topics in groups

Expected attendance The course has a workshop format and lives from exchange, discussion, debate and cooperation in the group.
